Elevators are the backbone of a multi-storeyed building. With the passing of the ADA in the 1990s, it became mandatory for multi-storeyed buildings to install elevators on the premises. The aim was to stop discrimination against people with physical disabilities. Today elevators have become a norm in buildings. Hydraulic Elevators:

These are the basic types of elevators that work with a piston mechanism. A piston is installed underneath the cab, which pushes it forward when the motor forces oil into the piston. The elevator goes down when the valve releases the oil/hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic elevators are mostly installed in low-rise buildings (4 stories or less). Their typical speed is about 1 m per minute—the installation cost of installing these types of elevators and maintaining them is relatively low. The machine room for these elevators is usually installed adjacent to the elevator shaft at the lowest level. They consume more energy and don’t fall in the green energy category.

Traction Elevators:

Traction elevators are installed in mid-and high-rise buildings and operate at a higher speed than hydraulic elevators. They are operated by an electric motor which moves the ropes/cables to move the elevator cab. The concept is like a pulley system that moves ropes over a geared wheel. There are two categories for this type of elevator geared traction elevators and gear-less traction elevators.

Since cables and ropes are used here, there are height restrictions for this type of elevator. They also need regular checking and maintenance of cables and gears and must be checked for wear and tear. If left unchecked for long, it can pose safety risks.

Machine Room Less Elevators:

Machine Room Less elevators are the most popular types of elevators today for mid-rise buildings as they are quite energy-efficient and offer reliable service. As the name says, they do not have a dedicated machine room over the elevator shaft, and instead, there are control boxes installed adjacent to the elevator shaft on the highest landing. They can travel up to 165 m at 3 m per second.
